Her origins unknown, Calypso is a mysterious and playful goddess of the surf who delights in tempting mortals and eliciting promises that cannot be kept. She is not wicked, though she is vengeful and merciless. Almost childlike in many ways, she delights in breaking mortal hearts, but any who hurt her are waylaid by storms and wrath that drag them to a briny grave. She takes the form of a slim, curvaceous undine with skin the color of a bright, clear morning sky and deep violet eyes flecked with pearls of green and red. She wears revealing garments of kelp and shells when she does don clothing, and lets her shimmering hair flow freely behind her without binding. Her church is divided into castes, the Waiting and the Ready. The Waiting are comprised of clerics, oracles, and the rare paladin who have sworn an oath of celibacy. They promise themselves only to the Stormflower, denying themselves any bodily pleasure until held in her embrace. In contrast, the Ready are those who have struck arcane pacts with her or her denizens of the deep, who have already given their souls over and are bound by no such limits. In rare instances, some Waiting can bear the delay no longer, and make their arcane pact to hand over their soul early to their Lady of the Deep, becoming theurges of enchantment and elemental water. These followers of Calypso usually wear flowers and grasses over their armors, and use both nets and light weapons carved from thick shells. The people of Eversea make daily offerings to the Gentle Storm in hopes of placating her fickle favor and returning home safely, and her whimsy is said to be the source of a sailor’s superstitions. The albatross is her favorite creature, and to harm one in Eversea’s skies is to invite the dreaded Black Mark on your body and soul, such that her terrible attack dogs, the Krakens, hunt you relentlessly. At least, that is the tale the old sailors tell.
